Born in Shreen, Lebanon in 1947, he holds a Bachelor of Theology from the St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology in Balamand. He was ordained a priest in 1974 and served parishes in Damascus. He was ordained a Bishop in 1984 and worked as the Patriarchal Vicar in Damascus. He was elected a Metropolitan in the year 1995.
